Had a blast playing through this book! I love a good dungeon crawl。 Though I bought this book back in high school, I found the dice rolls and page numbers and aimless wandering frustrating, and never got all the way through the book, though I did enjoy reading the scattered entries and looking at the great weird illustrations。 The trick to enjoying it turned out to be mapping the dungeon properly so I don't get turned around (especially in the maze), and actually keeping track of inventory and r Had a blast playing through this book! So excited when I finally completed it! Needed a good map and a bit of luck to go the correct way to find 3 keys that worked。 The maze part was hard, but again, mapping it out with page numbers helped me through it。 Great fun to read, even if the fights are a bit easy。

It feels weird writing a review for a book where I’ve probably only read half of the pages and completely out of order…A fun little adventure with a very old school feel, and with its back to basic stylings comes the absolute chaos of what can happen in this dungeon。 A lot of what happens doesn’t really make sense but at least it’s varied。Definitely make a map though, the maze near the end is a nightmare。

This was my nerd gateway drug, if I hadn’t of read this then I would never have got into D&D。 It is also awesome。

For historical reasons, maybe this should be 4 stars。 It was one of, if not the first book to combine choose-your-own-adventure style numbered passages that allowed readers to follow different stories based on their choices with actual dice-based gaming mechanics inspired by role-playing games。 (I say "one of" because Flying Buffalo published game-modules for Tunnels and Trolls before this, also there is a book from the UK in the 1950s that combined this CYOA style with puzzles - e。g。 solve this For historical reasons, maybe this should be 4 stars。 It was one of, if not the first book to combine choose-your-own-adventure style numbered passages that allowed readers to follow different stories based on their choices with actual dice-based gaming mechanics inspired by role-playing games。 (I say "one of" because Flying Buffalo published game-modules for Tunnels and Trolls before this, also there is a book from the UK in the 1950s that combined this CYOA style with puzzles - e。g。 solve this word search to continue。)ANYWAY, this is a dungeon crawl and it was the introduction to role-playing games for many young folk in the UK in the early 80s。 The drawings by Russ Nicholson are generally great。 Most of the time the writing is entertaining and the choices are meaningful。 Where this book falls down is in its overall coherence。 It was written in two halves, one each penned by (UK not US) Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone。 An editor then revised it heavily to make the two halves fit together。 I think the "seam" still shows and the book drags mightily when you hit the labyrinth。 But generally, Warlock of Firetop Mountain is a pretty amazing first effort that struggled to get published, but then inspired a huge and profitable series of books that are still being reprinted today。 。。。more

Sadly the book is made so that "the one true way" is not just the easiest way to win but pretty much the only way to win。 So replay value is poor since you cannot go through other interesting encounters and path if you want to win。 There is only few sections when you can choice freely and still get all items you need。And there is no options to turn back (except in that annoying maze)。 Mapping is almost mandatory (at least if you want to replay the maze section) and starting skill stat should be Sadly the book is made so that "the one true way" is not just the easiest way to win but pretty much the only way to win。 So replay value is poor since you cannot go through other interesting encounters and path if you want to win。 There is only few sections when you can choice freely and still get all items you need。And there is no options to turn back (except in that annoying maze)。 Mapping is almost mandatory (at least if you want to replay the maze section) and starting skill stat should be at least 9, since there are some tough mandatory fights。 。。。more

I was going to give this 3 stars initially but then I realized that there was something that bugged me during all my adventures under Firetop Mountain。 That thing is nowadays called "Dungeon Ecology" and it has to do with what/who you can find in a dungeon and the why and how。 Little made sense in this game book。 I can't comment with more detail on that because I would spoil it for people who haven't read it。 But at the end, if you ask WHY about most rooms you are left without a logical answer a I was going to give this 3 stars initially but then I realized that there was something that bugged me during all my adventures under Firetop Mountain。 That thing is nowadays called "Dungeon Ecology" and it has to do with what/who you can find in a dungeon and the why and how。 Little made sense in this game book。 I can't comment with more detail on that because I would spoil it for people who haven't read it。 But at the end, if you ask WHY about most rooms you are left without a logical answer and that's a big minus for me。 。。。more

Kinda fun - not really my thing, I’m not into the ‘high fantasy’ genre too much but had a go with my partner。 It was fun to do it together but just as a one time thing, I think I’ll leave him to do the rest alone。

First time playing and reading choose your own adventure/path game。 I have never tried playing game books before and I'm starting to learn about them and getting into them。Hope to see more interesting solo/solitaire game books of RPG and other genres to read, learn, and play。 First time playing and reading choose your own adventure/path game。 I have never tried playing game books before and I'm starting to learn about them and getting into them。Hope to see more interesting solo/solitaire game books of RPG and other genres to read, learn, and play。 。。。more

Great start to this series。 It is pretty hard to get through the labyrinth, as a kid I drew a detailed map and finally managed to get through the book。 Just by browsing around one gets stuck forever。

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is the one that started it all and it has plenty of charm packed into its pages。 The first half has you making your way through what feels like a goblin stronghold and it's fun。 The encounters make sense and you quickly find yourself barreling towards the river and the Ferryman who'll take you into the second half。 It felt like the second half was dominated by a frustrating maze。 You do some things before the maze but I entered the maze and quickly forgot about e The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is the one that started it all and it has plenty of charm packed into its pages。 The first half has you making your way through what feels like a goblin stronghold and it's fun。 The encounters make sense and you quickly find yourself barreling towards the river and the Ferryman who'll take you into the second half。 It felt like the second half was dominated by a frustrating maze。 You do some things before the maze but I entered the maze and quickly forgot about everything else as I was just sort of trapped in this overly frustrating environment and, in the end, I looked up a solution to the maze online because it was either that or I'd have to map out the whole thing and I just wanted to move on at that point。 Maze aside, it's a fun adventure despite how easy it is to miss a critically important item。 It felt like a nice dungeon-crawler adventure and there were some funny little references tucked away that put a smile of my face。 I even liked how the Ferryman raised the prices because it reminded me of the typical British train service and how they'll constantly increase prices whilst decreasing the quality of service。 。。。more

I would love to say that this has been a rip-roaring nostalgia trip through adventure and mystery, but the truth is that Warlock of Firetop Mountain has aged badly。 Admittedly, it is the first in the Fighting Fantasy series of books and I'm hoping that the later books aren't as frustrating。 Warlock is a fairly bland fantasy dungeon crawl。 You are here to defeat the titular warlock and steal his treasure, Although I loved this book 30 years ago, now it feels completely random and mean。 There are I would love to say that this has been a rip-roaring nostalgia trip through adventure and mystery, but the truth is that Warlock of Firetop Mountain has aged badly。 Admittedly, it is the first in the Fighting Fantasy series of books and I'm hoping that the later books aren't as frustrating。 Warlock is a fairly bland fantasy dungeon crawl。 You are here to defeat the titular warlock and steal his treasure, Although I loved this book 30 years ago, now it feels completely random and mean。 There are no clues to the correct path through the maze, you have to progress through a process of trial and error, and if you play the book the way it was written, by rolling dice to simulate every combat encounter, there's a good chance you will fail the book merely due to bad dice rolls。 。。。more

By today standards it is lacking in many respects: very little narration (it would not be necessarily a drawback if the game part were solid), many choices are random, and no way to go back to repeat certain choices or explore others in a single session (you can do it only when you restart)。It was however one of the first of its kind, and it has likely become a classic of its genre。

Played this for the first time today and I'm not sure if I should give this one two stars or three。 The book is similar to others books of the same genre and you may want to read this one first (although I don't recommend you) since it might be one of the first books that originated the "maze fever"。 As for my experience with it, I can say that it's controversial。 The first pages were endearing and I felt like a traveler in the story, specially because I was playing this book with a person who l Played this for the first time today and I'm not sure if I should give this one two stars or three。 The book is similar to others books of the same genre and you may want to read this one first (although I don't recommend you) since it might be one of the first books that originated the "maze fever"。 As for my experience with it, I can say that it's controversial。 The first pages were endearing and I felt like a traveler in the story, specially because I was playing this book with a person who loves Dungeons and Dragons。 We spent one to two hours in the fun part until we arrived to the maze (Maze of Zagor, as it's called in the book)。 That's when the whole story stopped making sense - the maze is huge, I literally had to write every single choice number until I had no more place to go。 And yes, I really spent a long time trying to decipher which way to go (at least 3 hours of my time) and in the end I didn't because I was always getting back to the same spot。 I tried to look at other reviews and it seems I'm not the only one having this problem。 In my opinion this maze should have been made in a different way (I can't say simpler, in an easy way, but with more hints) - otherwise it becomes simply too much frustrating and nobody wants to be stuck in a place for hours。 I ended up giving up。 I'll look for more books because I'm really confident this was a matter of unluckiness and not a matter of genre。 Also, I wasn't particularly amazed by the art style。 It was pretty average if I might say so myself。 This is a book for the braves and lovers of challenges! 。。。more

I will definitely be reading through the series now that Scholastic is republishing select works in it。 Now onto the actual book - this is how my journey looked like:Try #1: Killed by a ZombieTry #2: Did not manage to gather all items needed for victory。Try #3: Killed by a WerewolfTry #4: VICTORYAs to the actual writing in the book, I will have to caution you that it is not the best。 The experience is a game first and a book second as what you are getting there is some very barebones fantasy with little explanation as to who your character is and what you are doing there apart from that you are an adventurer out for gold。 The monsters you find throughout the journey are a mix of classic fantasy fare without a real theme (There were orcs, goblins, vampires, skeletons, and a giant sandworm。。)The buildup of the entire maze was pretty fun and I had a blast exploring the nooks and crannies。 I do think that the main objective of the book should have been more clearly presented to the reader。 On my second run when I FINALLY made it to the end I was just told that I had not gotten the correct keys and that I should explore some more which really bummed me out for a bit。 I wish I had known from the start that I had to look out for keys of some sort and perhaps I would have been more attentive to that。 I think the sweet spot for gamebooks like these is three tries as on my fourth run I was already speedrunning the beginning since I had done the same thing so many times already。 I did however have a great time and the gamebook really took me back to when I was a kid and tried to solve the mazes then。 It was definitely worth my time and I will keep on with the series to see what the future entries bring for me。 。。。more

I treated this more like a "choose your own adventure" book rather than bother with the dice and stats。 I was never one for dice games alone, I prefer teasing out a known challenge。 The adventure was a bit boring at first but the maze later on forced me to start mapping my progress and the final puzzle used the format well。 I treated this more like a "choose your own adventure" book rather than bother with the dice and stats。 I was never one for dice games alone, I prefer teasing out a known challenge。 The adventure was a bit boring at first but the maze later on forced me to start mapping my progress and the final puzzle used the format well。 。。。more
